During May, before the cold winter set in, we decided to take a five day break at Monks Cowl in the Drakensberg. Waldemar and Val Kretschmer joined us with their Explorer Caravan.

We travelled via Underberg and Himeville and took the dirt road past Lower Lotheni. We arrived at Monks Cowl late afternoon, where we set up camp and got the fire going. It was the first time that our son, Duncan, who lives in Amanzimtoti, was able to join us in the Drakensberg.

The next few days were spent exploring and walking in the beautiful mountains. André and Duncan, after a strenuous walk, braved the ice cold water high up in the mountains and enjoyed a well deserved swim. The photographers were in their element with the beautiful scenery while the rest of us concentrated on the birding.

One of the highlights of this trip was the opportunity to listen to the Drakensberg Boys Choir. It was absolutely magnificent and comes highly recommended.

It was very special to celebrate André's birthday so close to nature.

We had a fantastic break, with good weather, good friends and another lifer, Drakensberg Sisken, added to our birding list.
